Editorial Policy
Last updated: September 12, 2026
50 to Free helps people in their 40s, 50s, and 60s make informed retirement decisions after a late start. Our content combines personal experience, financial education, practical examples, and links to primary sources.
Accuracy
We review factual claims against reliable sources. We favor primary sources such as the IRS, Social Security Administration, Medicare, Healthcare.gov, and the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission. Contribution limits, tax rules, benefits, and other time-sensitive information receive a review date.
Experience and opinion
Steve Smith shares lessons from his own financial journey, including debt payoff, real estate, investing, and retirement planning. Personal results do not predict another person's results. Opinions appear as opinions.
Corrections
When we find a material error, we correct it promptly. Important updates receive a revised review date when appropriate.
Independence
Editorial conclusions reflect our honest assessment. Sponsorships, affiliate relationships, gifts, or compensation do not determine our conclusions. We disclose material relationships near the relevant content.
Artificial intelligence
Technology assists with research, organization, editing, or formatting. Steve reviews published content for accuracy, usefulness, and fit with the 50 to Free audience.
Guest contributors
Guest content identifies its author when possible. Contributors remain responsible for their experiences and opinions. We review guest submissions for clarity, relevance, and unsupported claims.
Scope
50 to Free provides education and personal experience. It does not provide individualized financial, investment, tax, legal, insurance, or accounting advice.
